A trough of low pressure over the western US will begin to overspread the Northern Plains on Friday with showers and thunderstorms expected from the Dakotas into the Upper Midwest. Moderate instability and strong deep layer shear will support a risk for severe thunderstorms capable of large hail, damaging winds, and isolated tornadoes by early afternoon. Eastward moving thunderstorms will linger into the overnight hours with portions of Minnesota seeing severe impacts after dark.

A risk for locally heavy rainfall will accompany shower and thunderstorm activity across the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest. Minor flooding and runoff will be possible with isolated rainfall amounts of 1-2 inches.
