National Weather Summary for Wednesday, July 27, 2016

Isolated thunderstorms are possible across the Northern and Central Plains on Wednesday, as instability builds during the day. Across the Mid Atlantic, thunderstorms are possible along a stationary front. A cold front pushing into Maine will allow for the development of thunderstorms. There will be the potential for thunderstorms across portions of Arizona this afternoon. Thunderstorms will bring the potential for heavy to excessive rainfall to portions of the Southeast. Into Thursday, thunderstorms will once again be possible for portions of the Plains and Mid Atlantic. Activity in portions of these regions will continue into Friday.

 

 

Region 1

A large cluster of intense thunderstorms is expected to slowly move across Region 1 through the morning hours. The storms may begin to move more quickly to the south and east later this morning. Wind gusts in excess of 50 mph, waterspouts, frequent lightning, and heavy rain will be possible.

Strong to Severe Thunderstorms Possible Wednesday for the Northern and Central Plains

Isolated thunderstorms are expected to develop across portions of the Northern and Central Plains into Wednesday. Instability will build as daytime heating and moisture increases across the area. Where the instability is greatest, isolated thunderstorms capable of large hail and damaging winds will be possible.

Update 12:39pm CDT: A severe thunderstorm has developed west of Minneapolis, MN and is moving eastward. Hail and damaging winds are possible.

Strong to Severe Thunderstorms Possible Wednesday Across the Mid Atlantic

Thunderstorms are possible across portions of the Mid Atlantic to the south of a weak stationary front. With plentiful moisture and daytime heating, strong to severe thunderstorms are expected to develop. The main threat will be damaging winds.

Strong to Severe Thunderstorms Possible Wednesday Across Northern Maine

Into the afternoon, a cold front is forecast to push to the east across portions of northern Maine. Ahead of the front, enough daytime heating should be present for the development of thunderstorms. Small hail and damaging winds will be the primary impacts with any storms that develop.

Strong to Severe Thunderstorms Possible Wednesday across Southern Arizona

Weak upper level support is expected over Arizona on Wednesday, with the potential for the development of thunderstorms over higher terrain. With the upper level support, possible strong to severe thunderstorms may be present into the afternoon with gusty winds as the primary impacts. Blowing dust will likely occur if thunderstorms develop.

Excessive Rainfall Possible Wednesday Across the Southeast

Heavy to excessive rainfall is forecast to develop across portions of the Southeast on Wednesday due to large amounts of moisture available across the region. Widespread convection with embedded thunderstorms is forecast to occur; widespread rainfall accumulations of 3-5 inches with locally higher amounts in excess of 6 inches will be possible. Flash flooding will also be a concern, especially where the ground is already saturated.

Strong to severe thunderstorms will be possible again across the Northern and Central Plains on Thursday. However, thunderstorms are expected to be a little more widespread than the isolated storms forecast for Wednesday. An upper level system is forecast to move out of the Rockies and provide upper level support for thunderstorms, while the front over the region will slowly advance. Ahead of the front, as instability builds into the afternoon, thunderstorms are forecast to develop with large hail and damaging winds the primary impacts.

Strong to severe thunderstorms will be possible for much of the Mid Atlantic on Thursday. Damaging winds will be the primary impact with these storms.

Ahead of a surface low forecast to track into the Northeast on Friday, strong to severe thunderstorms will be possible along the Atlantic coast. Into the afternoon, daytime heating and moisture ahead of the cold front will lead to developing thunderstorms. Gusty winds will be the primary hazards with any storms that develop.

Strong to severe thunderstorms will be possible across the Central Plains on Friday. Mid level flow will provide upper level support for the development of thunderstorms due to plentiful moisture in the region.
