National Weather Summary for Thursday, May 12, 2016

Thunderstorms are currently tracking through portions of Central Texas, as well as portions of the Mid South. Strong to severe thunderstorms are possible on Thursday across the Ohio Valley, Lower Mississippi Valley, and the Coastal Carolinas. On Friday, strong to severe thunderstorms will be possible from the Carolinas through the Gulf Coast, as well as portions of the Midwest and Southern Plains.

 

US Hazards

 

Region 1

Thunderstorms will continue to move across Region 1 through the morning and into the afternoon, maintaining and increasing in intensity. As thunderstorms continue to progress eastward across Western Tennessee and Southwestern Kentucky, the damaging winds will be the primary threat. Hail will be possible within the strongest cells as well as frequent lightning. With the heavy to excessive rainfall, flooding and flash flooding will be possible. Additional thunderstorms will be possible to the east across the Ohio Valley and into the Coastal Carolinas later this afternoon and into the evening.

 

Region 1

 

Region 2

A cluster of thunderstorms over Central Texas will continue to track southeast. As the thunderstorms continue to progress eastward, intensity is expected to be maintained or slightly increase through the morning and into the afternoon. The primary impacts associated with these thunderstorms will include damaging winds and frequent lightning. Small hail and heavy rainfall will be possible with these thunderstorms.

 

Region  2

 

Strong to Severe Thunderstorms Possible Friday from the Midwest to the Southern Plains

A new area of low pressure and cold front will begin moving southward across the Plains allowing for thunderstorms, some possibly severe. Large hail and damaging winds will be the primary hazards.

Severe Thunderstorms Possible on Friday from the Carolinas to the Gulf Coast

A few severe thunderstorms will be possible on Friday from the Carolinas to the Gulf Coast. Gusty winds and hail will be the primary risks with any storms that develop.
