National Weather Summary for Monday. May 14, 2018

Thunderstorms will continue across portions of Florida through early Monday evening in association with a tropical disturbance in the Gulf of Mexico. The threat for severe weather will continue from the Central Plains into the Mid Atlantic on Monday along a stalled front. Across the Southern Plains, thunderstorms are expected to develop ahead of a dry line. As an area of low pressure develops in the lee of the Rockies, thunderstorms may develop over the High Plains of Colorado.

Continued Thunderstorms Monday for Much of Florida
Showers and thunderstorms will continue across much of Florida throughout the day in association with a tropical disturbance in the eastern Gulf of Mexico. Activity will increase through the day. While widespread activity is not expected, wind gusts in excess of 40 mph, heavy rain, frequent lightning, and perhaps isolated tornadoes and/or waterspouts will all be potential hazards,

Thunderstorms from the Central Plains into the Mid Atlantic on Monday
The potential for severe weather will continue across the Central Plains and into the Mid Atlantic on Monday as a front remains stalled across the region. Morning storms will dissipate across the region, but with daytime heating, additional thunderstorms are expected to develop during the afternoon and evening. Large to very large hail and severe winds will be the primary hazards with these storms. Across the Ohio Valley and into the Mid Atlantic, widely scattered to scattered thunderstorms are forecast from the Ohio Valley into the Mid Atlantic during the afternoon and evening. Large hail and damaging winds will be the primary hazards with these storms.

Risk for Thunderstorms Monday across the Southern Plains
Strong to severe thunderstorms are expected to develop along a dry line Monday afternoon. Thunderstorms should be more widespread than previous days and will persist into the evening. Initially, large to very large hail and damaging winds will be the primary hazards. As storms evolve into a line, the primary threat will become damaging winds.

Thunderstorm Potential for the Colorado High Plains on Monday
An area of low pressure over the Southern High Plains will produce easterly upslope flow over the High Plains over Colorado. This will allow for the development of thunderstorms during the evening. Large hail and damaging winds will be the primary hazards with these storms before dissipating during the early evening.

Excessive Rainfall Monday for the Lower Great Lakes
There will be a chance for excessive rainfall leading to minor flooding across much of the Lower Great Lakes on Monday. This area has already received 2-4 inches of rain over the past couple of days and two more rounds of storms are expected to impact the region. The first is ongoing and will continue through the morning. The second round will occur during the afternoon as additional thunderstorms are expected, Another 1-3 inches with locally higher amounts in excess of 4 inches are forecast through the end of the day.

Thunderstorm Potential for the Southern Plains Tuesday
The potential for severe thunderstorms will continue across the Southern Plains into Tuesday as an area of low pressure intensifies over the Southern High Plains. While the thunderstorm potential will depend somewhat on the thunderstorms from the overnight and morning hours, additional thunderstorms may develop during the afternoon. Large hail and damaging winds will be the primary hazards with these storms. Further south along the dryline, widely scattered thunderstorms with large hail and damaging winds are forecast during the afternoon and early evening.

Thunderstorms Tuesday from the Ohio Valley into the Mid Atlantic
A weak stalled frontal boundary will remain in place across the Ohio Valley and Mid Atlantic on Tuesday, prolonging the severe weather threat. Scattered to widespread thunderstorms are forecast to develop during the afternoon hours; some of which may become severe. Damaging winds and large hail will be the primary hazards with these storms. The threat should subside during the evening.

Risk for Thunderstorms across the High Plains Wednesday
There will be a chance of strong to severe thunderstorms across the High Plains on Wednesday. Activity may develop during the afternoon and early evening, Large hail and damaging winds will be the primary hazards with any storm that becomes severe.

Tropical Update
Showers and thunderstorms will continue across the eastern Gulf of Mexico and Florida Peninsula. This system may become subtropical or tropical while it moves slowly northward. Regardless of development, this system will bring heavy rainfall to portions of Florida and the northeastern Gulf of Mexico over the next few days.

A Look Ahead
As an area of low pressure continues to move eastward, showers and thunderstorms will continue for portions of the Southern Plains and Lower Mississippi Valley on Thursday. By Thursday evening, thunderstorms may develop across the Northern Plains ahead of a front. This activity is forecast to spread into the Central Plains on Friday.
