Heavy rain is likely on Thursday for Northern California. A winter storm is likely for the Sierra Nevada.

Moderate to heavy rainfall is forecast across Northern California throughout the day. Total accumulations of 2-3 inches will be possible with locally higher amounts in excess of 4 inches possible in some areas.

Winter Storm Warnings are in effect across the higher elevations of the Sierra Nevada. With ample moisture from the area of low pressure offshore, and cooler temperatures at higher elevations, snow accumulations of 6-12 inches above 5000 feet will be possible. Heavier accumulations between 12-24 inches will be possible along the highest elevations. Sustained winds in excess of 25-30 mph and gusts in excess of 50 mph will result in blowing snow and near white out conditions. Within higher terrain, wind gusts in excess of 75 mph are possible.
