WeatherOps to Provide 24/7 Monitoring for the Summer Olympics

by Daphne Thompson, on Aug 4, 2016 1:50:22 PM

Norman, OK, August 4, 2016 —Weather risk and analytics leader Weather Decision Technologies, Inc.® (WDT), will provide weather monitoring and support for NBC Sports at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio De Janeiro. WDT's WeatherOps® team will create precision forecast and alerting products utilizing high resolution numerical models and observational data beginning with the highly anticipated opening ceremony for the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics on Aug. 5.

Throughout the games, WeatherOps will deliver in-depth land based Daily Planners, that will be used at Barra Olympic Park for such events as tennis and swimming, as well as Marine Daily Planners, useful for sailing competitions and spectator maritime traffic. The land-based Daily Planners contain hourly forecasts of wind, temperature, precipitation, and thunderstorm potential with emphasis on custom triggers that are set according to thresholds that are important to NBC Sports. The Marine Planners contain wind, wind wave and swell data for just offshore Rio which is highly valuable, as NBC has a broadcast set located on Copacabana Beach.

"We are thrilled to support NBC Sports and continue working with their team for a high profile event such as the Summer Olympics.  Their professionalism and continued focus on safety allows for our team to do what we do best through ongoing communication throughout the duration of the event," says Chris Kerr,

Director of WeatherOps Forecast Services. "NBC's 24/7 access to our Forecast Desk provides a personal touch and the peace of mind that we will alert them to potential hazards that may affect day to day and event to event operations."

Already, weather has played a role in the Olympic games, with the most serious incident occurring last Saturday at Marina da Gloria, the starting point for sailing events, where waves partially destroyed the main ramp sailors use to access the water. Damage also occurred at Copacabana beach, where the tide reached television studios built on the sand. Workers erected a wrought-iron levee to stop waves from battering the structure. Sand barriers have also been created to protect the beach volleyball arena.

WeatherOps forecasters and the entire WDT organization will be watching NBC's coverage of the Olympics and cheering on Team USA.
