iMap® Weather Radio is Designed to Save Lives by Combining the Power of a Weather Radio with the Precision and Convenience of a Smartphone

Norman, OK., April 7th, 2010 – Helping to save lives and protect property during severe weather events and other natural hazards, weather leader Weather Decision Technologies, Inc., (WDT) is launching a new nationwide alerting program for iPhone in partnership with local broadcasters across the United States.

The alerting program, dubbed the Integrated Multimedia Alerting Program (IMAP) is designed to provide consumers with precise alerts for their location and up to four other locations delivered to their mobile devices. The solution also delivers real-time streaming video from local television stations, live audio feeds from local radio stations, and spoken warnings from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the National Weather Service (NWS).

“The IMAP network offers local media companies the ability to convert their audience’s mobile devices into a next-generation ‘weather radio’, featuring video, verbal, and/or textual severe weather early warnings,” said Mark Taylor, Senior Vice President, Interactive Media of WDT. “The location-sensitive platform allows local television and radio broadcasters to provide breaking news for the precise location of mobile device users and to deliver those broadcasts immediately, in times of impending danger.”

WDT is showcasing the IMAP platform at the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) annual convention in Las Vegas, April 12th-15th, 2010. This IMAP platform provides a direct alerting connection between the United States’ broadcasting companies and iPhone users, allowing local meteorologists to provide real-time streaming video to smartphones during the weather events that affect them.

By joining the IMAP Network which provides sophisticated location-based services and pinpoint accuracy for any given severe weather alert, local media broadcasters may participate in providing a unique, co-branded service to consumers in their demographic market area (DMA). This allows them to extend their brand to iPhones and ultimately iPads and other mobile devices, and deliver important weather information via video or audio during times of hazardous weather.

By downloading the iMap Weather Radio application from mobile stores, weather alerts are automatically delivered directly to mobile devices and synchronized with branded, local media severe weather programming, providing a 360 degree multimedia view of any given alert event. In its initial implementation, local media company members of the IMAP Network are able to leverage the IMAP platform to create their own branded iPhone applications, which may be marketed within their own DMA’s as an integral part of the service broadcasters provide, tied to the seamless, nationwide IMAP network. The iMap Weather Radio application for iPhone also provides an Interactive iMap, showing the location of the user relative to warnings and radar echoes.
