Helping Business Weather the Storm

Hurricane Data for GIS Users

by Mike Arellano, on Jul 12, 2018 3:04:16 PM

With hurricane season once again underway in the Atlantic Basin, we are hoping this season is less active and intense than 2017. Should Mother Nature decide otherwise, WeatherOps is prepared to help and assist. For GIS analysts and developers with assets that could be threatened by a tropical activity, WeatherOps has multiple data streams available to analyze those threats. These include current storm location, forecast tracks, and the cone of uncertainty. Also covered are wind radii and wind swath, as well as other data layers available to be served from our ArcGIS server.

Highly detailed weather data displayed in a data viewer can help groups, such as offshore operators, effectively manage a potential tropical weather impacts. Measuring the distance of a storm’s effect to an asset can help determine what actions need to be implemented, mitigating the overall risk. A good visualization of real-time weather data provides operators with another “view” of detailed guidance, other than more traditional static text reports.

As for tropical activity, the Atlantic Basin isn’t the only region of concern, nor is it the only basin where GIS data is readily available. WeatherOps meteorologists monitor the entire globe for tropical activity that can be hazardous to any offshore operation, from drilling projects to vessel transits. An example of this is a tropical system that was tracked off the coast of Australia in 2017 in the image below.
